Online degrees are becoming increasingly popular these days but has the stigma of a self-taught degree been lifted and what is the impression of employers when recruiting for new positions?

The acceptance of online degrees varies depending on several factors. They are the company, the industry, the level and type of degree, the institution, and most importantly the view of the individual reviewer. Employers might worry about the legitimacy of a degree from an unfamiliar institute. The best bet for an employee is to enrol on a degree course that is from a well-recognised and respected university.

The online bachelor’s degree seems has the most sceptics. Results from an online survey identified that 61% considered the online degree acceptable but less credible, while the rest found the online-earned degree unacceptable. Legitimate online degrees seem to be better accepted for courses that tend to be knowledge-based, such as information technology, computer science and accountancy courses for example.

From an employer’s perspective a lot comes down to the personal preferences of the recruiter and respective managers. Some individuals look for work experience far more than academic qualifications, while others weight academic history and accomplishments more heavily. Naturally, individuals just beginning their career will see more emphasis on academics.

In summary online degrees from well-respected institutions are reasonably well accepted in knowledge based areas but not so much in theoretical areas. They are most likely to be accepted in technology or other knowledge-based fields. Relevant work experience may enhance the credibility of the online degree.
